Andalusian Horse
Association

Andalusian Horse Association - Rocky Mountains

The Rocky Mountain Iberian Horse Club

One of my dreams is to visit the Rocky Mountains, to see Colorado. It's just something I've always wanted to do. So when Christina Turissini contacted me about the RMIHC, I was more than happy to add this Association. I'm waiting for more details, and (after I've finished in John-Denver-reminiscence-land) I'll keep this updated. Find out more about Christina on our personal links page

(I know the Rocky Mountains are part of the United States, but this is a human-page, not a distant directory: and right now I'm dreaming of Colorado.)

Eastern Region of the United States

The Eastern Region Andalusian Horse Club - a Regional club, with a logo that caught my attention:

Celebrating the Iberian Horse.

According to Ben Johnson, Show Director for this club, the Eastern Region includes members all over the United States - and a few in Canada - but primarily up and down the east coast and east of the Mississippi. Ben speaks about the energy and diversity of the members - and of ERAHC's dedication to small owners and breeders. Our club has a very "family" feel to it, and our annual show is as much a family reunion as it is a great competition. We feel that to grow the Andalusian breed in the USA, we need to focus strongly on the small folks, and grow the breed at the grassroots level.

They have a clear long-term vision: Our mission is to promote harmony and goodwill among the community of Iberian Horses: Andalusians, Spanish, Portuguese, Spanish/Portuguese, and cross-breds.. and ..to increase public awareness of the Iberian Horse, and the history and traditions of the breed. They do this through an annual show, clinics, social events, and a regular newsletter.

Andalusian Horse Association - Australasia

The Andalusian Horse Association of Australasia Inc. There are State Branches of the Association in all the States of Australia, excepting only the Northern Territory. My correspondent here, Tasmanian e-friend Elisabeth Cannell, tells me these branches are 'very active.' I like the picture that conjures up - it sounds like the new world spark in the people there.
Since its foundation in 1973, the AHAA has maintained the stud books for

    • the Pura Raza Española - pure Spanish Andalusian
    • the Australian Andalusian
    • the Partbred Andalusian
In 2004 a stud book commenced for the Pure Spanish/Portuguese bred horse - a joint work of the AHAA and the Lusitano Horse Association of Australasia.

New Zealand

The National Spanish Horse Association of New Zealand

A crisp and up-to-date website, looked after by Jackie Ockey who also acts as the stud book keeper. Current president is Adriane Bryce, Matawhero Andalusians.

Jackie is another of those nice people I've encountered as we're building the website. She replied to my e-mail in an open, friendly fashion, and had a relevant comment:
"I have a very good farrier in NZ who also specialises in horses with foot problems. My 4-year old is not shod, but everytime Robert comes to trim his feet, his levels are checked as part of regular maintenance. The feet are so important and if something is wrong here, then you can never attain the full beauty of the movement which is possible with the Andalusian horses."
Thanks Jackie - nice to have farrier related input.
