Andalusian horse with Media Carta
Andalusian horse with Media Carta is a term seen
quite frequently in advertisements.
It's also a term we're getting increasing questions about: What is meant here by
'andalusian horse' and 'media carta'?
I've been becoming more aware that, as a resource site,
there are some areas we need to address. These include
- differing perspectives - the Spanish, and that of other countries, especially the States
- basic differences in the registration processes - Spain and IALHA
As always, this page is a work in progress - as we receive notification, we'll update on any changes. And as always, check with your own Association.
An overseas buyer of horses from Spain, who is
operating from a particular perspective,
may well feel displaced when faced with a different perspective.

I'm going to speak here of the PRE - Pura Raza Espanola - Stud Book/Registry in Spain.
For ease of understanding you could consider it to be equalled by the other Pure Race Stud Book/Registries here -
Arab, Hispano Arab, etc - and paralleled by the Registry for the Purebred Lusitano in Portugal.
In Spain - (the perspective from here) - there is no Stud Book/Breed
Registry for 'Andalusian'. Andalusian is an accepted 'description of a group',
generally including
PRE's - Purebred Spanish horses - and Pure Bred Lusitanos. People here are quite relaxed about this.
Andalusian horse with Media Carta
Media carta literally means 'half paper'.
It is not an official recognition
of a horse's PRE potential. A horse is PRE - Pure Spanish - or he isn't. No halfways.
Andalusian horse with media carta is the everyday term in general use for a horse that is registered as a Caballo de Deporte Espanol -
a totally separate registration from the PRE Stud Book.

Following is a quote from the FESCCR - commonly called the Cria Caballar -
the department responsible (up to now) for the Stud Books of Horses in Spain. As of 2007,
ANCCE will be taking over the PRE Stud Book. This is pulled from what I have on
record - I don't have any update that supersedes this.
The FESCCR speak of their work being the 'identification and registration of
all the Pure Races registered in Spain - viz,
- Pura Raza Española - PRE, Pure Spanish Horse
- Pura Raza Árabe - Pure Arab
- Pura Sangre Inglés - Pure English Blood - Thoroughbred
- Raza Anglo-árabe - Anglo-Arab
- Raza Hispanoàrabe - Spanish-Arab
- Raza Trotador Español - Spanish Trotter
- y otras Razas - other races
Then they speak of: ..crossed (cross breed)
saddle-horses - i.e. riding horses - which have 'always been known as
MEDIA CARTA'
"Estos ejemplares NO pertenecen a las RAZAS PURAS" - emphasis theirs -
'These examples DO NOT belong to the PURE RACES
pudiéndose registrar sin embargo en el Libro del Caballo de
Deporte Español.
However, they may be registered in the Book of the Spanish Sport Horse.
So we're talking about a separate registry altogether.

An Andalusian horse with media carta then would be referring to a
horse who had one parent that was a registered PRE. This horse could be registered
as a Caballo de Deporte Español.
The strength of the Spanish PRE stud book is its adherence to the registration process.
Before DNA came into play, this was the only way to ensure the bloodline purity.
(Yes, there are weaknesses in the system, but there's work being done on it all the time.)
