Books are like chocolate - everyone has their particular preferences. Below we list some andalusian horse books, farrier books, forums and websites we relate to.
These are a few of the books we class as favorites - books on horses in general, and books on Andalusian Horses and the Purebred Spanish Horse in particular. Initially theyre grouped as follows:
I enjoy interacting with other horse peple around the world. With a bit of time and writing, I have found the forums that fit my way of thinking. Forums that are courteous, fun, informative and easy to work with.
Horse Forums covers a wide range of horse related subjects, and has a number of international members.
I tend to have at least 3 books open at the same time. I enjoy factual reporting and personal stories, and I always like to see whats new. For reading and reference on the Andalusian Horse I start with This is the Spanish Horse - Juan Llamas
His love for the Pura Raza Española shines through, and his choice of poetry adds something special.
The amount of detail in this explains why my copy is decidedly used.
English edition, translated by Jane Rabagliati. Published in Great Britain 1997. J.A.Allen & Company ltd. 1 Lower Grosvenor Place, London, SW1W 0EL
The Classical Rider - Being at One with your Horse - Sylvia Loch. A classical classic. Trafalgar Square, Howe Hill Rd, North Pomfret VT 05053
Andrés works with principles and experience hes gathered over the years, and never stops searching out and testing new ideas -as well as coming up with some himself. This has proved especially interesting in the results of his work with unbroken youngsters of 18 months to 3 years.
Even for those dedicated to one breed of horse - in this case the Andalusian, and specifically the PRE,
there are books dealing with principles that apply across the entire spectrum of horses. The books he enjoys include:
The Complete Training of Horse and Rider - Alois Podhajsky
The version we have is published by Harrap limited, 10-23 Ludgate Hill, London, EC4M 7PD.
The Western Horseman range of books. Various subjects, expert authors, practical principles.

Academic Equitation - General Decarpentry Also from J A Allen see under The Spanish Horse, above.
Two books, recommended by a lady I respect. Rebecca is a member of our IberianHorseWorldwide Group - the great cyber community of thinking, laughting, polite Iberian horse enthusisasts.
Tug of War: Classical versus Modern Dressage, by Dr. Gerd Heuschmann, published by Trafalgar Square.
Classical Schooling with the Horse in Mind, by Anja Beran, with notes and commentary by Dr. Gerd Heuschmann. published by Trafalgar Square.
And from Andrés - and Ramon:
Training the Horse in Hand - the Classical Iberian Principles by Alfons J Dietz.

Information on the farrier, horseshoeing and hoof care is not always covered in Andalusian horse books. Farrier information is a specific part of this site, and we encourage you to browse the farrier pages.
There are many excellent farrier reference works available, ranging from detailed veterinary works to introductions for the first time horse owner.
The Principles of Horseshoeing II - Dr Doug Butler is probably the best known and widest read of all the farrier books.
Detailed information, thoroughly researched and carefully presented. It looks intimidating at nearly 600 pages,
but it is clearly written and worth consulting for a particular problem area, or for working through.
Butler Publishing, P O Box 1390, LaPorte, CO 80535
The Hoof and how to Protect it without Nails - Feasible Applications.
Bodo Hertsch, Stefanie Hopper, Helmuth Dallmer
Good information, clear diagrams and photos - though if youre not a farrier or a vet, you may need to concentrate as you read some of the detailed explanations. Originally in German, translated by Brian Ernest Welch, D-21388, Soderstorf. Published by: Helmuth Dallmer, Alte Landstrasse 3, D-21376 Salzhausen-Putensen. ISBN 3-88542-524-6
Linda in spanish means beautiful. Linda Burns, who shares our vision of presenting and promoting the spanish horse as it truly is, runs the Yeguada las Lindas.
She concentrates on the carthusian bloodlines and currently (nov 2009) has a very nice carthusian mare called Linda for sale.
I encourage you to visit the site and get in contact with Alison or Mercedes. Sad truth is that Horse rescue is simply not as active in Spain as it is in the UK, so any help, support and encouragement you can give will be valued.
Susan is a breeder of Pure Spanish Horses and stands Conquistador XII, the first black son of Indiano XVIII, Champion of Spain, Mexico and the USA.
Christina describes herself as a semi-professional photographer. In addition to her photography, she creates paintings in Photoshop from her photographs. These in turn she uses to make greeting cards and prints.
On her site are photos of her own horses, examples of the work she can do, and many of the wonderful Iberians to be found in Colorado. Worth a visit.
John St Ryan arrived in the USA with an English background of Classical Riding, He subsequently immersed himself in the western style of working with horses, studying under the teachings of the Old Masters of this work, Tom Dorrance and Ray Hunt.
His passion and interest in Doma Vaquera stem from a visit to Spain almost 20 years ago. He tells us he is now busy improving his Spanish. Currently, he says, I probably know enough to get myself in trouble! But I shall persevere.
He is a top performer in the true Doma Vaquera and it is clear that he loves what he does. Results show it: championships at IALHA,and recognition on a wide scale. This is doma vaquera well done and well presented, a site written with energy, clarity and detail.
Ron Breines, from New Mexico, presents his approach to training horses in the manner of the California vaqueros. He speaks of pursuing gentle, classical horsemanship, whilst maintaining the practicality of the traditional vaquero.
He has looked at the historical connections between Spain and California, and has an ongoing interest in the connection. He is currently working with some Andalusian horses in this discipline, and preparing to publish his series of 3 books.
Ron is a valued contributor to our IberianHorse-Worldwide Group - the great cyber community of thinking, laughting, polite Iberian horse enthusisasts.
Ron in turn links to a site where you can read about Ed Connell, his mentor, and the Ed Connell books
Weve made some great Californian Andalusian Horse friends - and we know its a state where they breed, ride, buy, sell and totally enjoy their horses. For Pure Spanish and Lusitano horses from California or from right here in Spain, there are some good choices. We are now a Member of The Southern California Equestrian Directory
These links are our choice, websites weve visited and enjoyed. Some of them are Andalusian Horses sites - some not.
