The general process of registration is the same for all horses in Spain who have a breed registry. I'm concentrating here on the Purebred Spanish Horse - the Pura Raza Española.
- Inscribed
- Registered
- Passed revision
- Apt for breeding
- Passport
- Equine Health Record Tarjeta Sanitaria Equina
- Con Carta – with papers
- Media carta – a term often used to describe a horse registered as a CDE - means 'half paper'. It is not an accepted term of registration.
- Sin carta – without papers
In Passing:
I’m listing the papers with their Spanish names in full. It may help you recognise which piece of paper
someone is referring to.
The purpose of this website is to be a friendly source of information about
Andalusian Horses in Spain.
This is a record of the registration of a Purebred Spanish Horse in Spain - later I'll talk about how other countries register Pura Raza Española Horses - in their own registries, and in that of Spain.
When necessary, get details from your particular Andalusian Horse
association.
Andalusian Horse Registration
INSCRIBED -
The inscription of a foal into the genealogical books and records.
A foal born to registered Pura Raza Española parents in Spain is monitored from the time an approved stallion
covers the mare.
The birth is recorded, a blood sample taken, and a microchip implanted.
Identity Document
The result is the Identity Document that remains with a Purebred Spanish Horse, all its life -
The Certificado de Inscripción y Carta Genealógica - Certificate
of inscription and genealogical record.
On the front is
- the horse's name
- the registration number in the Stud book of the Pura Raza Española
- those same details of both parents
,
Inside are the microchip number - not the same as the registration number - and the description of
colour and markings.
On the back of the green card is the genealogy of parents, grandparents and great-grandparents.
A Purebred Spanish Horse that is not inscribed is the exception
- & is actually a contradiction in terms. If it’s not inscribed, it’s not a recognised PRE.
Inscription is an ‘accepted given’ when you’re dealing with horses from registered
studs and serious breeders.
Private owners can choose whether or not they wish to inscribe their foals, though obviously it’s to their benefit
if they do – thinking ahead to breeding.
Andalusian Horse Registration
REGISTERED
The general term used to refer to a horse’s inscription.
In Passing:
Strictly speaking, the terms
Inscribed/registered and passed revision/apt for reproduction
apply to any true Pura Raza Española Horse in Spain - otherwise it wouldn't be a Purebred Spanish horse!
It’s acceptable for a sale listing to mention these – you know
what is being offered for sale within the normal registry of PRE's.
Andalusian Horse Registration - Relevant Papers and Terms Used
PASSED REVISION - Revisión
You may find the term 'Passed Revision' in the description of a horse for sale.
This simply means the same as - has the same implication as - the phrase
APT FOR REPRODUCTION - Apto como Reproductor -
suitable for breeding.
Indicated by this sticker on the back page of the identity document.

The revision is the official review that all inscribed PRE’s - mares and stallions alike -
are eligible to undergo at the age of 3.
Almost all horses are reviewed, and almost all pass the revision.
Horses are reviewed from a veterinary and from a breeding perspective. They are evaluated according to minimum
standards considered necessary for retaining the characteristics of the race. On passing this revision,
they are graded as suitable for reproduction.
In Passing: Recently the revision has itself been revised, and 'levels' of grading introduced.
The initial revision remains the same.
A Purebred Spanish horse, correctly inscribed, who fails the revision, is deemed
‘not suitable for reproduction’.
A foal parented by this horse will not be eligible for inscription. This is aimed at preventing faults -
whatever caused the revision failure - being introduced into the race.
Andalusian Horse Registration - Relevant Papers
PASSPORT
Issued by the controlling body of all Stud Books in Spain, the FESCCR in Madrid. It is designed to record national
data related to travel, competition, breeding, medication, change of ownership - and even death. The certificate of inscription,
the essential identity document, is normally contained within the red-covered passport.
Andalusian Horse Registration
EQUINE HEALTH RECORD - Tarjeta
Sanitaria Equina
The regional record of a horse's markings, veterinary inspections and changes of ownership.
In Andalucia this is issued by the Regional Ministry of agriculture and fishing -
and it's also a green card!
Pura Raza Española - Registration and Terms Used in everyday conversation
Con Carta – with papers, with record.
The record here is the record of inscription described above, the carta genealógica that records
the foal’s parentage.
Sometimes also called the carta de origen - papers of origin.
Con Carta – is another way of saying that the horse is inscribed.
Media Carta – Half Papers.
A term generally used as a description. The horse could be registered as a
CDE - Caballo de Deporte Español.
Only one of the parents would be a registered PRE. A horse with media carta cannot
be used for registered breeding
within the race of Purebred Spanish Horses. It can of course breed within its own category.
In Passing
Do papers matter?
It depends what your plans are for your horse.
If you’re going to breed with a Pura Raza Española, then yes. If you want to show in classes for
Purebred Spanish Horses, yes again.
If you want a great horse to ride and enjoy, and you’ve balanced the factors of the
perfect horse,
you could investigate Andalusian Horse registration
as it applies to horses in other registries.

Again we emphasise – in matters relating to papers, rules and regulations concerning Andalusian Horse registration,
the final word must come from your particular Andalusian
Horse associations and organisations.
