Query: Can I identify a spanish horse by his brand. from L. in the UK.
Hi. I am looking to trace my spanish horse by his branding as i have no paperwork at all for him. It was a pure accident that I came across him at a dealer’s yard and had to buy him.
I would really like to know which type he is - p.r.e or lipizzana or andalusian. He is branded so he must be registered somewhere surely?
Let me talk briefly about the breeds you mention.
A brand is part of the tradition of Spain. It was always used as a sign of ownership, like cattle brands in the US.
A rancher, or breeder, would brand all his stock - stallions, geldings, PREs, part-breds, cattle, donkeys etc.
A brand is NOT a sign that a horse is registered.
Not as a PRE, a Lusitano or a Lippizaner.
It is a sign of who the breeder or a previous owner was.
1. Send me a foto of the horse. I may be able to say which of the breeds he most resembles.
2. Send me a foto of the brand - I may recognise it.
3. Read up the articles on the website about andalusian and spanish horse names, paperwork etc.
4. Ask your vet to scan his neck for a microchip. All registered PREs and Lusitanos are microchipped, and this number will give you instant info.
