IDENTIFY a SPANISH HORSE by his BRAND

Query: Can I identify a spanish horse by his brand. from L. in the UK.

Hi. I am looking to trace my spanish horse by his branding as i have no paperwork at all for him. It was a pure accident that I came across him at a dealer’s yard and had to buy him.

I would really like to know which type he is - p.r.e or lipizzana or andalusian. He is branded so he must be registered somewhere surely?

IDENTIFY SPANISH HORSE BREEDS - response

Let me talk briefly about the breeds you mention.

  • A PRE is a Pura Raza Española - a Pure Bred Spanish horse who is correctly registered in the Spanish Stud Book.
  • Andalusian is the name given to horses that may have spanish blood in them, or that came from spain. In Europe it is not a breed, and does not have a registry.
  • Lippizaners descended from Spanish horses, beginning over 4 centuries ago. They are now a separate breed from Austria, with their own registry.
  • Lusitanos, which you did not mention, are the horses of Portugal. They are closer and more similar to the PRE than are the Lippizaners. They have their own Stud Book, which is as carefully kept as that of the PRE.

IDENTIFY SPANISH HORSE BRANDS

A brand is part of the tradition of Spain. It was always used as a sign of ownership, like cattle brands in the US.

A rancher, or breeder, would brand all his stock - stallions, geldings, PREs, part-breds, cattle, donkeys etc.

A brand is NOT a sign that a horse is registered.
Not as a PRE, a Lusitano or a Lippizaner.
It is a sign of who the breeder or a previous owner was.

HOW YOU COULD FOLLOW UP IDENTIFYING YOUR NEW HORSE

1. Send me a foto of the horse. I may be able to say which of the breeds he most resembles.
2. Send me a foto of the brand - I may recognise it.
3. Read up the articles on the website about andalusian and spanish horse names, paperwork etc.
4. Ask your vet to scan his neck for a microchip. All registered PREs and Lusitanos are microchipped, and this number will give you instant info.
