Mares in Foal
At the moment we have 3 smugly pregnant andalusian mares in foal standing out in the paddock.
- Serranilla is a totally happy lady - loves Andres, recognises his 4x4, calls him when he drives in, and thoroughly enjoys being cuddled.
- Barquillera - aka La Parisienne - is as laid back and non-conventional as ever. Her current amusement is grabbing the edge of the shadecloth,
testing its resilience, and - failing destruction - chewing it with determination.
- Quijotita, the tall dreamy lady, is happy to be home after her time away with Mr Tall Dark and Handsome
There remains Queridita. . . . .
Theoretically the equation is a foregone conclusion
- She had a perfect first pregnancy, no problem falling in foal etc.
- The stallion she is with now has foals on the ground
- Another mare who came in to that yard at the same time as she did is pregnant to that stallion
- There is great on the spot vet care
And she Just Hasn't Taken.
It has been said among some of the old stud folks that (a) the heat is now contra-conception - we can have daytime temps up to 48 in July an August,
and (b) having her foal at foot may just be delaying things.
We really want this combination, so she is coming home now, and will go back in October when Arco Iris is weaned, and the weather is cooler.
