Quarter crack hoof care
Quarter crack hoof care -the Essential Elements
Hoof care, balanced trimming and correct, appropriate shoeing are all essential
in pre-empting and treating quarter cracks. These 'before' and 'after' shots show what a difference the correct hoof balancing
and shoeing made for two horses - the first one an Arab, the second an Andalusian.
Quarter crack hoof care - Shoeing is a Positive Action
L: Quarter crack at initial presentation. R: four and a half months later
Procedure: Shoeing with individually made bar shoe; hoof balanced by specific trimming; pressure relieved below quarter crack. In this case
the crack was left open - no composites or wire bridge were employed.
Quarter crack hoof care - your Farrier is a Positive Contributor
Shoe regularly according to your horse's
work, morphology
and environment
Keep your horse's hooves correctly trimmed and balanced. This is very much a part
of the work of a farrier - he works daily with natural balance, trimming and hoof care.
Whether your horse is shod or goes 'barefoot', your farrier can assess his movement and the
relevant state of his hooves.
If your horse has a fault in the hoof wall or in the coronet that tends to throw a
quarter crack at any unexpected time, then always shoe him as though he already had a
quartercrack.
L: Quarter crack at initial presentation. R: two months later
Procedure: shoeing with individually made natural balance bar shoe; hoof balanced by specific trimming; pressure relieved below quarter crack.
The horse's weight indicated use of
composites and wire bridge. These were employed as the crack displayed no bleeding.
Quarter crack hoof care - Balancing the Hoof
Dynamic Hoof Balancing is essential when you assess the horse's
feet. What looks right for a static hoof - in a horse standing still - may not be near what
that horse needs when he is moving. The multiple aspects of motion dynamics come into
play here. A careful appraisal and analysis of each individual hoof, and the pressures
that different paces induce, are necessary.
Each hoof must be trimmed to land flat when the horse is in motion.
Lateral propulsion incorrectly applied can aggravate the wall-loading pattern.
Quarter crack hoof care- What can you do?
You can contribute to the prevention and re-occurence of quarter cracks by employing regular
good horse management
- After treating a quarter crack, employ a carefully planned work schedule until
the crack grows well past the coronet - you'll see the progress as it's replaced by
good, solid hoof wall.
- Feed correctly, and use supplements to assist in making up deficiencies
- Treat the feet with good quality hoof ointments - a bad hoof dressing does more
harm than good.
- Keep the hoof walls moist - especially in dry conditions
- Look out for injuries and warning signs
To quote a Tasmanian farrier I've met through the website: An ounce of prevention is
worth a pound of cure - Thanks Red Amor!
