Quarter Crack Repair
Quarter crack repair - Hoof stabilisation
Initial aim in quarter crack repair is to immobilise the
damaged area of the hoof wall as much as possible. If the two separated sections can
be stabilised, further damage can be arrested. To stabilise and assist the hoof wall to grow firm,
solid and united I'll use:
- Materials on the hoof wall itself
- Supportive materials under the hoof
- Hoof balancing and trimming
- Natural balance principles
- Corrective and supportive shoeing,
- Dynamic hoof balancing
Materials on the Hoof Wall - used together or separately
- Screws and wire to form a support bridge (above)
- Chemical composite hoof repair materials (below L)
Quarter crack repair - Bleeding (above R)
When using composites, any bleeding or infected area in the hoof wall must be
left totally or partially uncovered.
You can build over it, but an area must be left open to allow the entry of oxygen, and help
prevent further infection. Treat the infection with your normal routine.
The hoof in the right-hand picture was treated without the quarter crack ever being covered. See the final result of this quarter crack repair case.
Supportive Materials under the Hoof

I frequently use chemical composite sole support materials to fill the sole
area of the hoof. This spreads the weight bearing load from the hoof
wall to the whole foot.
I've found this to be an effective technique in a number of cases. The material acts both as a
supportive surface, spreading the weight bearing load,
and as a hoof wall movement immobiliser.
