Quarter Crack Treatment
and repair

Quarter crack treatment - What can be done?

Various strategies are employed in quarter crack treatment and repair, depending on the penetration, depth and extent of the quarter crack.

A superficial sand crack can often be arrested by burning the top of the quartercrack to prevent it encroaching further.

If the quarter crack is deep and threatens to split the hoof to the sensitive structures below - or if this penetration has already occurred - one or more of the techniques presented in the following pages may be employed.

Quarter Crack treatment: Where does it Start?

The primary aims in quartercrack treatment and repair are

    • thoroughly clean out the quarter crack
    • stabilise the hoof wall
    • relieve hoof-to-shoe pressure on the area directly below the quarter crack while it grows out

Each individual quarter crack treatment program is based on initial steps that:

    • prevent infection entering any exposed sensitive tissue
    • promote solid, healthy hoof growth from the coronary band
    • assist in the stabilisation of the hoof wall

NB: Again I'll say it: Every horse is an individual, and every case presents individual aspects. The photos in the next pages are from my own files, and show how I've applied specific techniques in differing cases.
