VAQUERA SADDLE

Buy a vaquera saddle from Spain and you buy a saddle with a built in history. Used in modern competition and out in the open fields, the design and construction are still faithful to the origins.

The vaqueros of Spain, and later in Mexico and southern america, have ridden in these saddles for centuries.

The traditional cowboy is known as a vaquero, and his saddle has come to be called a vaquero saddle. But in purist terms, it is a silla vaquera as the spanish word for saddle, silla, is feminine.

In Passing:

Cowboy in spanish is male - and that is a grammatical fact, not a case of discrimination. He is a vaquero. A cowgirl is then a vaquera.

The Spanish word for saddle - silla - is female. So strictly speaking, and obeying the rules of grammar, a cowboy saddle is a silla vaquera, whether the one riding in it is male or female.

Over the years, though, (and with echoes from the John Wayne movies!), vaquero has been transliterated into the English language, and vaquero saddle is a generally accepted term.
